Trading journal: the only tool that shows your real patterns

A journal is not a performance report, it is a mirror. It does not tell you how much you made, but WHY you decided — and under which conditions you go wrong.

Three columns are enough to start: the reason for entering, the context, and the emotion felt at the moment of the click.

The five lines that are enough

Date and time, instrument, reason for entry (level, context), reason for exit, and a one-word emotional note.

Everything else — screenshots, indicators, ratios — is a bonus that never replaces those five lines.

Reviewing: the part everyone skips

One review per week is enough, done calmly. You are not looking for the winning trade, you are looking for the repeated pattern: the same too-early entry, the same oversized trade after a loss, the same bad hour.

One identified pattern beats ten added indicators.

Virtual journal first

The simulator keeps your trade history: you can therefore keep a real journal without risking money, and compare your statistics month to month.

It is the most honest way to measure whether your rules hold.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need paid software?

No. A five-column table does the job. What matters is the regularity of the review, not the tool.

When should I write in the journal?

Right after the exit, while it is fresh, for the emotion; and once a week, calmly, for the patterns. The two moments serve different purposes.

What if I am ashamed of a trade?

Write it down anyway: those teach the most. A journal containing only good trades is useless.

Does a journal improve results?

It improves self-knowledge, which is the condition for a stable method. No tool guarantees a market outcome.
